If you scroll down this page all the way to the bottom where you can see the author box, you’ll read an early disclaimer about me not even attempting to try out any eating challenges. There is no way I could possibly win a food eating contest. No way Jose, well that’s not entirely right, if it’s a chocolate eating challenge then I’d probably have a good, good shot haha.
Man versus Food
It was a Friday when me, Titus and Doi finally made our way to Buddies Burger in Talamban. I have read good food reviews about this Cebu burger resto from weeks back and I got interested in visiting it. I was especially curious about their Buddies Burger Eating Challenge – take down their Ultimate Burger in 5 minutes or less.
Eat this in 5 minutes or less
It was a lucky Friday to visit this burger joint because our friends and travel bloggers Edcel, Lakbay and Ayn were available and excited too to munch on burgers and quesadillas, burritos and more. Yebaaaah! It was really serendipitous since Ed was traipsing through South East Asia just a week before, ‘dwin was on work assignment in South Cebu and Ayn had busy work sched too. But all five of us were there at Buddies that night. Lucky eh?!
So it seemed like the stars were aligned that I have a good feeling that we won’t left Buddies without a single picture from our group tack up there on their wall of fame. One or two or several of us will be declared conqueror of their Ultimate Burger Challenge before the night ends, or so I thought. LOL haha.
Winners and Conquerors of Buddies Ultimate Burger Challenge
Challenge Accepted
It took us some time before we placed our orders, since Titus and Ed took a bit of convincing. Actually, I think not and they were just looking for a slight nudge, in fact, both guys were quizzing the resto staff on how many have won the burger eating challenge, how many patties it’ll be, how big the serving of fries that goes with the burger, how many failed attempts there have been, how easy it’ll be to gobble up the burgers, and “Miss, may tip ba kayo sa amin or techniques”. They also keep going back to the wall of champions and check out the time lapses and all. All these are signs of curious and eager challenger hehehe.
We were set; Ed and Titus will take on Buddies Challenge while Doi and I ordered the regular Buddy burger (P89) with one patty, a slice of cheese, some onion and lettuce. We also ordered side dishes of chili cheeze fries (P85) and cheese quesadilla (P80) that later on we realized was not punched. But it’s no biggie, everyone including the staff were excited with the upcoming challenge.
Ayn then arrived a few minutes before the challenge started, perfect! We have someone to take a video while Doi and I take still shots.

Ready, Set, Eat!
It was funny and we were loudly cheering Field Trip Boy and Soloflighted as they try to stuff their mouths with the food before them. “Go, go, go” “Kaya niyo yan” “Go Tayts! Go Ed!” we chorused. We must have been a sight back then with the ruckus we were making lol.
“Ang init” says the two. Yah we can see it was hot, steam still coming off the patties. That’s why you can see them use fork and knife rather than picking the burger and taking huge chunks like crazy.
Doi took a paper towel to use as fan to help cool down the burgers.. “That’s againt’s the rules ma’am”. Opppsss hahaha.
Sorry guys we can’t help, rules, you’re own your own.
Hopeful Challengers
To cut the story short, Titus gave up slightly over two minutes; he wants his food warm but not piping hot. But he swears though if the 4 patties on the burger challenge were not hot, he’d be able to consume everything on record time. Aside from the bragging rights and the t-shirt that comes with winning the Ultimate Burger Challenge, the P350 price tag on the burger was a good motivation for him to nail it. That’s because the cost of burger will be refunded if the challenger proves himself worthy to be part of the Buddies Wall of Fame. =)
What surprised me though is the way Ed took on the burger. C’mon you can see Ed’s built, he’s not hefty big but Ed was like a black hole devouring the burger that comes near his mouth. At 4 minutes, the burger was gone. Amazing! We were cheering him to take on the fries; unfortunately, fries became the downfall of Soloflighted. Hehehe
At end of challenge, poor Ed, I think he was close to puking just by looking at the fries. His discomfort was made worst when Lakbay aka the Diva arrived later and ordered the same Ultimate Burger sans the challenge and sat next to Ed. Hehehe. Edcel tried not to look at what Lakbay was eating and to move his seat father away from him. Lol.
The Ultimate Burger with 4 patties and a few slices of cheese cost P200 without the fries. If you take on the challenge you’ll deposit P350, refundable only if you win. If you win, confetti will rain. Joke. But you’ll find your grinning image stuck on Buddies wall for all eternity plus you get a cool looking shirt that declares you conqueror.
We gawked and were amazed that someone runs with the burger at 2:54 record time. Less than 3 minutes!!! Imagine that!

Buddies Burger Food Review
The burger was not very flavorful but it was juicy. The patties were made out of finely grounded meat that easily crumbles if you scoop it, prompting the guys to use the fork. Burger patties were pan fried, not grilled I think. Plus points on the available Thai hot sauce that they have, I love it on the burger, it complemented well. Serving size can fill you good. The Buddies menu and their food choices are reasonably priced too.
A downside was that the Chili Cheese Fries that we ordered did not register any ‘bite’ and spiciness to it.
Things that this Cebu restaurant can improve on is making dessert choices available such as cakes, cold treats and offering value meals or combo meals that come with drinks and/or fries.
Buddies interior maybe inspired by the typical North American diners in the 50’s era with their striking red and white design accents. The whole place is relaxing, lighting is A-okay, making the overall ambience conducive for dining and having a good time with your family and barkadas.
By the way, kudos to their staff for good service!
Will I be back? Yes, because I really want to try their burritos and quezadillas.

Gathering of Like Minds
We stayed on for a couple more hours at Buddies. If you put on a group of bloggers in a single room trust that topics will cover what we are passionate about – blogging, site monetization possibilities, urging and pressuring Ayn to come up with his personal domain, and of course since our blog niche belongs to travel, we talk about what we are most passionate about – shared stories on the roads, travel plans and places still to conquer.
We did not talk of conquering other food eating challenge that night, the ‘wounds’ are still fresh haha.
Was it fun? You bet! Will I try the challenge? Nope. Di kaya Hehe.
Friday, Food, Friends – Awesome Night!
Go to Buddies with your barkada and friends, it’ll be a fun experience to nail down that wall of fame slot. Good luck! If you win, please come back here and share your story. =)
