Selecta Magnum Ice Cream: It’s All Hype Unfortunately

Stars and celebrities endorses it like Solenn Huessaff and Raymond Guiterrez. My brother claims Selecta Magnum Ice Cream is the Ultimate Treat!

Been hearing all about it from entertainment news clips, adverts and online buzz, it’s trending in twitter and facebook and people keep posting pics of themselves eating the ice cream bar.

So off we rushed to the supermarket. Excited to taste the creamy ice cream goodness, the heavenly chocolatey coating of this popular ice cream. (Yep it’s an old ice cream brand that was just recently brought and introduced in the Philippines.)

We tried the Gaisano Mactan supermarket but couldn’t find any so we went to SM Savemore and they have Magnum Ice Cream. Good! Finally, we’ll be able to taste it!

Took out 100 pesos from my pocket to pay for two Magnum bars. Yah SRP is P50 (ouch!) but the price is all good based on the reviews and feedbacks we’ve checked. Some stores sells it at P60 like 7 Eleven, P55 in Ministop but in general the price of a single Selecta Magnum Bar is P50 and up.

We bought the Selecta Magnum classic and the almond variants. There is a 3rd variant the Selecta Magnum Chocolate Truffle which was not available then. We paid at the counter, the cashier inquired ” Is that really good? “. “It’s our first time Miss, we’ll see.”.  Made me think a lot of people have bought this “IT” ice cream of the moment that the cashier was getting curious too.

Took some shots. Hurriedly tore off the plastic. Excitedly bit into the chilly goodness – expecting fireworks.

Selecta Magnum Ice Cream:  Okay but Not Great

*

Coating? Yes! Selecta Magnum Icecream chocolate coating delivers!

Finally, tasted the Vanilla ice cream!

Hmmm. Uhmmmm. Is this all there is to the ice cream?

Not creamy. A bit bland. Nothing outstanding.

Selecta Magnum is all Hype, I say.

Forgettable unfortunately.

Selecta Magnum Classic and Almond Hype or Not – YOU DECIDE!

Oh well at least now I tasted the Selecta Magnum Ice Cream. Won’t be taking out more P50 bills out of the pocket. I had more fun eating the regular Selecta ice cream sticks which are a lot cheaper at P10 per stick than this ‘special ice cream’. This one is not worth it in my books. Overpriced.

If you are curious where you can buy Selecta Magnum in the Philippines, you can try in the stores mentioned above or your regular grocery stores, heck, even Julie’s Bakeshop sells the ice cream bar

Anyhow, what about you? Have you tried it? What do you think? What is your experience with the Selecta Magnum? Share your thoughts. I may just be densed you know hehehhe

Am I that ‘outdated’? Haven’t heard about it yet. Your post piqued my curiosity. I will surely try that anytime soon and I will get back to post my comment.

Hi thanks enzoy! Will be waiting for your feedback of Selecta Magnum πŸ™‚ My brother defends Magnum with such passion kaya baka ako lang ang di nasiyahan, dahil maybe too high ang expectation ko hehhehe

Same reaction here. Taste it and forget about it. Was so intrigued by my friends posting pics of Magnum Selecta. I think it’s a bit overpriced. Still LOVE Selecta Cornetto (the original not the disk). A steal for P20, especially the UBE flavor.

Totally agree. It’s delicious but not with “mind-blowing deliciousness” to make you easily depart with your hard-earned 50 pesos (it costs 55 pesos in my place).

thanks smilingpocket for sharing your insight! =) agree kung mayaman or may pera ka siguro you won’t mind much but if you are an average pinoy na talagang pinaghirapan ang pera, ang P50 price ng Magnum ice cream bar is mahal na.

But you got to applaud the marketing campaign and the big launch ng Selecta Magnum it leads to pagkaka-sold out sa stores kasi madaming mga tao ngayon gusto matikman ang latest’favorite’ ng mga stars.

Taste wise different people have varying opinions and feedbacks of this newest ice cream bar to hit town πŸ™‚

shocks. the taste, ‘forget about it’ XD
nakaka-intriga lang po talaga ‘tong Selecta Magnum na ‘to kasi stars endorsed this product and with big launch.

Pero kung gusto niyo po ng masarap talaga at pasok sa budget, try the ice cream @ UP Shopping Center. Price ranges from 15-25php. Grabe, binabalik balikan pa namin yun. All flavors are indeed worth the pay! sarap:)

    Hi,
Even here in Singapore, when we heard about it na trending sa Pinas, para lang kami natawa.. Na-uuyam na nga kami dito, mas masarap pa nga yung Selecta Walls- binebenta sa mga vendors dito sa side street, pwede pa i-sandwhich yung icecream bar sa slicebread/wafer.. mas masarap at only SG$1. mas siguradong babalik balikan..

hi, had a first taste of magnum back in SG, 2008 under wall’s brand. didn’t like it. it’s just marketing that got people interested. seriously, the original cornetto is still the best for me. not worth the price.

kagabi while watching tv pinalabas yung commercial ng magnum. clearly it’s marketing sa mga sosyal. may pareyna-reyna effect pa. then i found out our socialites are the local endorsers of this ice cream. usually kasi adverts are geared towards the “masa”, but not this. if you’re sosyal, then this is your ice cream.

it didn’t help that i noticed a lot of my friends on fb were posting magnum-related status and pics. naisip ko ano ba meron dito at parang baliw na baliw sa mga tao. so curiousity got the better of me over the hype of this product. i wanted to know for myself once and for all ano ba meron.

i tried it. and it’s not worth it for me to even post on fb that i ate magnum. it’s all just hype. marketing people of this product must be patting themselves for the hugely successful campaign (heard it’s always sold out in stores) of an ordinary and forgettable ice cream.

so what’s up with people posting on fb yung pagkain nila ng magnum? is this an example of mass hysteria? haha!

    Hi,

Inaamin ko na magnum fanatic ako.And I prove it na masarap talaga sya and sulit naman. Pero lahat ng magnum na kinain ko is libre lang. I just wanna example to my boss.(Yong boss ko nilibre sya ng magnum ice cream.Pagbalik nya sa office bigla syang may inabot sa amin ng magnum at tinanong namin sya. “Sir bakit nanglibre kayo?” He said “Ang sarap eh ngayon ko lang sya natikman kaya binilhan ko kayo”. And also yong isang kaopismate ko araw2x halos pumupunta ng 7eleven para lang sa Magnum. Nagkecrave sya lage non.). So I realized ang sarap naman talaga. Marami lang ang kontra kasi mahal daw. For me 50pesos is worth it.Mas may mahal pa sa Magnum Ice Cream. Magnum is less sugar and though pure yong flavor nya talaga. Get it?

Its kinda funny how you have all these great blogs on your travels, etc. But the most comments I’ve seen on one of your articles is this one about ice cream. lol

I agree with you on this though, it was pretty hyped when it first came here too. I tried it and it was only slightly better than the grocery store brand ice cream bars. Not to mention I could get a box of 12 store brand for cheaper than a box of 4 magnum.

On the topic of ice cream, is there Dairy Queens in the Philippines?

hi vince, yah lol hehe. this post was timely published just as when Selecta Magnum was “officially launched” here amidst all the hoopla. sending netizens to search frenzy and landing on Penfires haha.

yep, we’ve got Dairy Queen in Manila, not here in Cebu and other cities though. πŸ™

You know it’s a hot country when everyone gets worked into a frenzy over ice cream. lol

I love dairy queen, it’s pretty much the only ice cream I eat (mmm blizzards) hopefully there will be one near where I stay in Manila. Maybe if I pay them enough they will let me sleep there. haha
