Most credit card companies like Banco de Oro (BDO) may waive the annual or monthly fee if the client meet certain criteria of the card issuer. This is regardless if the card issued is Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, etc.
2 weeks ago, my husband called up BDO to request for reversal of the monthly fees on his BDO Shopmore credit card. He has been regularly using this card since 2014.
Previously, the monthly charge is only P125 or P1,500 per year. But for sometime now the BDO Shopmore credit card monthly fee is no longer P125, but P150 or P1,800 annually. Masakit na talaga sa bulsa so he opted to call up the cc company to request for reversal of the membership renewal fees. Shhhhh… there was a wife nagging him to call up BDO hahah.
So anyhow since I am the one who takes charge of finances in our home, he passed the phone to me after he verified his identity with the BDO hotline customer service representative (csr).
My own credit card is issued by BPI, and I find BPI’s process straightforward when requesting for annual fee waiver.
So imagine my surprised when the BDO rep enumerated 10 options that we can do to successfully request for waive monthly fee. And you must do this every month! Inconvenient. But at least if you do the steps, you will save some moolah, so all good.
Important: Before you do any 1 of the 10 options, you must call BDO credit card hotline first, signify your intention to the csr that you are requesting membership renewal fee waiver and that this is the option that you will do to get approval.
If you do any of the option BEFORE calling the hotline, it won’t be counted.
During the call, the csr will jot down your plan. Then after you do the chosen option within the allotted time frame given by the csr, call them back to inform them that your chosen option has been accomplished.
To be honest, I forgot to ask the csr if it is necessary to call them back once the chosen action is done. If you do call them, please confirm with them if you need to notify them that the chosen transaction is done or if there is no need to call again and that fee waiving will be automatically posted on their end.
10 Options for BDO Credit Card Monthly Membership Fee Waiver or Reversal
There are several ways on how to request for Banco de Oro credit card waiver of membership fees. We found this up when we called up their hotline and these options are as follows:
- Install and activate BDO Pay app for the first time and use it to scan and pay a transaction. Do this within 15 calendar days from the day you called BDO hotline to request for credit card monthly fee waiver.
- Transfer the balance of your non-BDO credit card to your BDO cc.
- Convert your outstanding balance of at least P20,000 in your BDO credit card to 6 months-to-pay installment.
- Enroll your BDO credit card for Auto Debit arrangement to your savings account.
- Enroll your utility bill to your credit card as Auto Charge.
- Spend and charge your BDO cc with at least P3,000 within the next 30 days.
- Use the BDO “Cash it easy” wherein you will convert to cash your card’s available balance and pay in installment with added interest.
- Convert at least P3,000 straight purchase to installment.
- Pay tuition via installment using your BDO credit card, and
- Pay medical bills thru installment arrangement on your BDO credit card.
Do any of these options EVERY MONTH but only AFTER you call the hotline for membership fee waiver request. Again, if you do any action without informing BDO beforehand, the transaction will not be considered for credit card waiver of fee.
Take note that the bank may change and update available options, so I strongly suggest to call bdo card hotline to ask them about the latest ways to waive credit card membership fee, monthly or annual.
Speaking of annual fee, after the csr enumerated the options, I said what we want is reversal of the monthly fee charges for the months starting January 2021 to current month September and to REQUEST WITHOUT OPTION. The csr responded that she has to checked my husband’s credit card’s record first.
I told the csr that we always pay in full every month and that we have never been levied any interest or finance charges. Plus, the average monthly purchases we charge to the BDO Shopmore card is over P20K and in the last 4 months alone we charged over P300K to the BDO credit card. *I underwent emergency CS and baby was in NICU, we used credit cards to settle the hospital bills.
After about 5 minutes wait, the company agent was back on the phone and says that the account qualifies for the reversal of the monthly charges. Approved! Yeyyy, maki credit back ang mga na-charged na na fees.
Boosted-up with that great news, humirit pa ako ng isang request, can I request reversal too for last year, 2020? Hehe baka kasi makalusot.
“Ma’am, what I can do is process waiver request for the last 12 months cycle, so October 2020 to September 2021”, says the csr.
“Okay, I’ll take that, thank you”.
The total credit card monthly fee reversed and credited back to account after just 1 banking day totals P1,600. Yeyyy! Here’s the screenshot of the BDO CC transactions:
By the way, I asked the csr that aside from always paying the cc balance in full before due date, just how much is the minimum amount that must be charged to the card on a monthly or yearly basis to qualify for waiver of the BDO credit card’s monthly/annual fee, to which the csr said that the info I am asking is for internal use only and she can’t tell me. Bummer.
I made an additional request to make my husband’s Shopmore’s membership renewal on an annual basis instead of monthly, so we will only call once a year for the BDO credit card annual fee waiver request. The csr noted the request and says that on the next billing cycle, the annual fee of P1,800 will be charged.
‘Okay’, I said. ‘But we can call again to have it reversed, right?
“Yes, ma’am, just call us back”.
Update: October 14, 2021 – the P1,800 annual fee is now reflected on the latest SOA. Today, Titus called BDO to request for waive annual fee without undergoing any option. After about 10 minutes on the call, the request was approved. Few hours after, I checked online via mobile app, the P1,800 renewal fee on the credit card has been reversed. Very quick and hassle-free. Thanks BDO.

Update on BDO credit card request for waiver on annual fee of P1,800 this 2022.
Last October 3, 2022 the P1,800 annual fee is already charged on the BDO Shopmore credit card. Then last October 5, 2022, my husband called up BDO hotline and talked with a csr to request for a FULL REVERSAL of the annual fee. The csr said that my husband qualifies for the waiver on full amount if he will use the credit card for at least P3,000 straight payment within 30 days after calling the hotline. No other option was given to my husband unlike last year when we called and there was a list of options to choose from, in order to waive annual membership fee.
Anyhow, the csr gave my husband the reference ticket for the request. When asked if my husband needs to call back to report the fulfillment of the P3k spending requirement, the csr said that there is no need and that the system will automatically reverse the P1,800 charged on the cc.
Last October 6, 2022, the P3k spending requirement is done and on October 9, the reversal was already reflected on the account, labeled as “conditional membership fee reversal’ as checked via the BDO mobile app.
Update 2023 BDO annual fee waive – my husband requested full reversal of the credit card annual fee and the BDO csr said that he needs to spend or use his card for P5,000 within 30 days. Then a day after there is a conditional reversal reflected on the BDO app for -P1,800. My husband has fulfilled the P5k spend requirement and the conditional waiver is finalized.
Hope your own request for credit card annual fee waiver will also be swift.
Apply for a credit card, it can be very useful and handy to have but do be wise in using it.

Similar situation as mine. I own a zero annual fee BPI credit card, while my husband owns a BDO credit card. We were surprised that BDO switched from annual to monthly fee (we were not notified). We called BDO and we’re given 10 options but quite different. One of the options is to spend at least 1,000 pesos to qualify for the monthly fee waiver. You’re right about the hassle of calling them every month to request for waiving of fees. But the required amount to spend for the annual fee waiver is higher (I forgot how much).

I just called today and asked if I can convert the membership fee from monthly to annual but the bdo rep says it is not possible now since the changes from annual to monthly is applied to all their credit cards.
And calling them monthly to waive the monthly fee is very hassle since it takes ~20 minutes waiting time.

I also do this last month. I thought they will automatically waive it once you’re done with the condition of spending 1k for 30 days, but not. I called today but they are quite busy and can’t accommodate my call. Too bad for the inconvenience.

I also requested to have the fees be charged annually but the representative said it would not be possible because it is their new regulation. But she did say she will ask her supervisor.. I checked my SOA today and I still have it on monthly basis. This change is very inconvenient and I’m honestly thinking of switching CC. Is BPI good?

Hi Lee, my own cc is BPI Amore, so far I find it easy to request for the annual fee waiver. However, when it comes to perks like cash back / rebates / food gcs etc., BDO credit card is superior based on our family’s experience.

Hi Claire, my husband is already charged the annual fee for 2022 and have subsequently been approved for reversal on full amount, P1,800 for Shopmore credit card. I suggest you call BDO hotline again and hopefully the csr that you’ll talk to will be more responsive to your needs, because requesting BDO to make the membership fee be charged annually is possible. And then you can also request waiver on the annual fee after it’s charge to your cc.
