We are pretty familiar with movies and story lines of boy meets girl during travels, summer vacation, sojourn to land unknown. Well this short story is such, its stuff movies are made of. =)
Imagine a girl so young travelling on the road, escaping fate, taking charge of her destiny and then a chance encounter forever alters her life.
And the boy? He was not really looking for love but he was, shall we say on the right place, at the right time.
Errr.. let’s backtrack, it was not really a road, for they met not on solid ground but on a big boat bound for another province where the girl intends to hide and escape a ‘harrowing fate’ back home and the boy was working as a hired-hand-on-boat.
Sparks must have flown when their eyes fell on each other.
If you ask the girl now, she’d tell you “No. Definitely not”. But she’ll say it giddily with wide smile lighting up her whole face. Lol.
Back in their days, a guy need only to go to the father and ask for a girl’s hand and a union will be set if the father approves regardless of the girl’s feeling. This was the norm, a norm the girl refuses to buckle down to.
So when the girl heard that her avid suitor whom she does not fancy will go to her father the following night and ask for her hand in marriage, without much planning, without really thinking it through except ‘to stay will mean a possible suffering for life’, the girl took flight.
Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. They promised to honor and love each other since then.
In our small barangay Yul and Mancia are well-known not for holding prominent positions in the community, nor of wealth, nothing of that kind. Rather, they are simple folks but the kind of relationship they share sets them apart, theirs is something that inspires.
You only have to be around them for a few minutes to have faith in love and relationship.
scene from their golden wedding anniversary – renewal of vows
Real soon too will be their wedding anniversary – 55th in fact.
If you happen to pass by our barangay and you see an old couple walking and holding hands, the girl hair’s so white while the guy seems to be forever grinning – that would be them. Hope you greet them, just say ‘hi’. Nope don’t ask them about their love story unless you have all the time in the world hehe.
From Just Two To A Battalion!
